BearLax Club
College Recruiting Information
Freshman Year:
- Focus on doing well in school-receiving high marks
- Play different sports Check out college games
- Attend college camps and clinics
Sophomore Year:
- Continue to focus on grades-enrolling in more difficult courses
- Take the PSAT’s
- Research schools of interest based on:
- *Academics*Athletics*Size of school*Location*Success of the program
By March or Early April-
- Send an intro letter to schools of interest and include the following:
- Introduce yourself
- Express your interest in the school and the program
- Request information about the school and lacrosse program
Include in this letter or a follow up letter-
- Contact information-home address, email address, phone #’s
- Academic Information-unofficial transcripts, test scores, awards
- Athletic Information-Sports, Club Teams, Jersey #’s, awards
- Extra Curricular Activities-clubs, community service
College Response
- They will send you their formal questionaire.
- Return it with all of the information that you know-do not hide anything!!
- Send updates for the questionnaire: grades, awards, test scores
Summer
- Play a lot of lacrosse
- Attend camps and tournaments
- Give a Top-10 list of colleges to your BearLax Coaches (by the end of August)
NCAA RULES FOR COLLEGE COACHES:
- Cannot make any phone calls to Freshman or Sophomores-first day for phone calls is July 1st after the completion of the prospect's junior year.
- Cannot contact prospective student-athletes (email, call, write letters,etc) until Sept. 1st of Junior year
Junior Year:
- Stay in touch and show interest in your top schools throughout the fall
- Visit top schools-notify the coach that you will be on campus to set up a meeting
Following your first semester/marking period-
- Send Transcript
- Get a start on standardized tests-PSAT’s, SAT’s, SAT II’s
- List of schools to high school and Bearlax coaches
- Intro Letters to schools of interest
- High School and summer schedules with jersey #’s for each
- Respond honestly and keep in touch
- Visit campus/arrange meeting with the coach
- Send transcripts/test scores
- Take standardized tests
- Find out which tests are required by the schools you are interested in
- Send coach evaluations to club coaches
- Attend camp at the school of interest or where the coach will be working
NCAA RULES FOR COLLEGE COACHES:
- College coaches are able to send written correspondence with the purpose of recruitment beginning September 1 st of the prospect’s junior year.
- Unofficial Visits: You are allowed to visit as many schools as you want on your own dime. You can meet and spend as much time as you want with coaches on their campus. You can also call coaches as much as you want, but they cannot return your calls.
- Phone Calls: College coaches may begin making phone calls to prospects beginning July 1 st , after the completion of Junior year of high school. Coaches are strictly limited to one phone call per week for each prospect You may call them with questions or concerns, however they cannot return your call if they have already called you once that week
Senior Year:
Official Visits-
- An official visit implies great interest on the part of a coach to have you come take a close look at the school, get to know the team, and get a true feel for the program.
- On an official visit, the institution pays for your transportation to the school, your meals, your housing, and any admissions to athletic competitions. Usually you stay with members of the team.
- You can take up to five (5) official visits
National Letter of Intent/Signing Period-
- The 2nd Wednesday in November
- Be aware of early admission deadlines
- The National Letter of Intent is a signed agreement stating that you intend to attend the school in which you received it from. The school also recognizes that you are admissible and they intend to accept you as a student-athlete
If you want to take all of your visits-take them!! If a coach wants you that badly, they will wait for your decision. The purpose of the recruiting process is to find the best fit for YOU!
